Do TikTok ads work for service businesses?

Short answerTikTok ads can work for a service business whose work is visual or easy to explain on camera, and whose buyers are on the app. They work when the campaign uses the Lead generation objective, the TikTok Pixel and Events API record each enquiry, and the video looks like a TikTok rather than an advert. For most businesses it is a second channel to test after Facebook and Instagram.

Key points

  • Use TikTok's Lead generation objective, with an instant form or your website, not Reach, Video views or Traffic.
  • Install the TikTok Pixel and the Events API so TikTok can see each enquiry, and send a shared event ID so they are not counted twice.
  • Creative should look like a normal TikTok: a person, filmed on a phone, showing or explaining the work in the first seconds.
  • Budget for a fair test against TikTok's minimums and judge it on cost per lead beside your Meta campaigns.

Most service business owners meet TikTok as a question from someone else: a nephew, a competitor's video that went round, an agency pitch. The useful question is narrower than "should we be on TikTok?". It is whether a paid campaign there can bring enquiries at a cost your business can afford, and what you need in place before spending to find out.

Which service businesses suit TikTok?

TikTok is built around short vertical video, shown in a feed that the app chooses for each viewer rather than one built from accounts they follow. That has two consequences for a service business. Your ad competes for attention with entertainment, so it has to be watchable. And a new account with no followers can still reach people, because TikTok decides who sees what.

Service businesses tend to suit TikTok when at least one of these is true:

  • The work is visual. Kitchens, landscaping, renovation, detailing, cosmetic treatments, furniture, interiors. A finished job or a before and after makes a natural video.
  • The process is interesting. Trades and crafts where watching the work being done holds attention on its own.
  • The owner can explain things on camera. Accountants, solicitors, clinics and consultants who answer common questions plainly in under a minute.
  • The buyer is open to being prompted. Someone who has been meaning to redo a garden can be nudged; someone with a burst pipe searches Google.

It tends to suit businesses less when buyers only look in an emergency, when the work cannot be shown for confidentiality reasons, or when nobody in the business is willing to appear in videos. Those businesses are usually better served by search, which the guide to SEO and ads together covers.

Which TikTok objective should you choose?

Like Meta, TikTok Ads Manager asks you to choose an objective first, and optimises delivery for it. TikTok groups its advertising objectives into awareness (Reach), consideration (Traffic, Video views, Community interaction) and conversion (App promotion, Lead generation, Sales).

For enquiries, choose Lead generation. It lets you collect leads in three ways:

  • An instant form that opens inside TikTok, which TikTok says loads faster than a typical landing page and can pre-fill some fields.
  • Your own website, where people fill in the form on your landing page.
  • Messages, through TikTok direct messages or popular messaging apps.

The same warning applies here as on Facebook and Instagram. A Video views or Community interaction campaign will find people who watch and follow, which can look encouraging and bring nothing. The main guide to ads that bring enquiries explains why objective choice decides so much of the result.

Choose Lead generation if you want enquiries. Every other objective will report success on a metric that does not pay invoices.

How do you track enquiries from TikTok?

If leads come through a TikTok instant form, TikTok records them directly. If they come through your website, TikTok needs to be told, and the tools mirror Meta's:

  • The TikTok Pixel is code on your website that reports visitor actions to TikTok. You create it in TikTok Events Manager and verify it is firing.
  • The Events API sends the same events from your server, so they arrive even when the browser blocks the Pixel. TikTok describes it as a server-to-server connection.

TikTok's standard events for leads include SubmitForm (a visitor submits a form), Contact (a visitor contacts you) and Schedule (a visitor books an appointment). For most service businesses, SubmitForm on a successful enquiry is the main one.

When the Pixel and the Events API both send an enquiry, include the same event_id in both, which TikTok requires for event deduplication. Then test it: submit your own form on your phone and confirm in Events Manager that one event arrives, at submission, not on page load.

If your Meta campaigns already send to a landing page, the same page can carry both pixels. The guide to landing pages for paid ads covers the page itself.

What creative works on TikTok for a service business?

The single biggest mistake on TikTok is running a polished advert. People scroll past anything that looks like a commercial. The ads that hold attention look like any other video in the feed.

A practical brief for a service business video:

  1. Vertical, filmed on a phone, with natural sound and on-screen captions, because many people watch without sound.
  2. The point in the first seconds. Start with the finished result, the problem, or the question, not your logo.
  3. A real person. The owner, the fitter, the clinician. Buyers of services are deciding who they will let into their home or trust with their money.
  4. One idea per video. One job, one tip, one answer. Fifteen to forty seconds is plenty for most.
  5. A plain ask at the end. "Tap below to book a free design visit in Leeds" says who, where and what.

Ideas that suit services: a time-lapse of a job from start to finish; "three things to ask before you hire a..."; the most common mistake you fix for customers; a walk-round of a finished project with the price range; answering a real question a customer asked this week.

Spark Ads are worth knowing about. They let you run an existing organic post, from your own account or a creator's with their authorisation, as an ad, and the likes and follows it earns stay on the original post. If an organic video of yours is already holding attention, it is often the best place to start.

Worked example. Hartwell Joinery is the sample business used across this site. The plan is illustrative.

Hartwell films three phone videos in a week: a thirty-second time-lapse of a kitchen going in, the owner explaining what happens on a free design visit, and a walk-round of a finished walnut kitchen with "most of our kitchens fall between £18,000 and £35,000" on screen. All three run in one Lead generation ad group, targeted at Leeds and Harrogate, sending people to the same landing page used for Meta ads, with the TikTok Pixel and Events API firing SubmitForm on each enquiry. After the test, Hartwell compares cost per design visit booked on TikTok against Facebook and Instagram, and keeps the channel only if it is competitive.

What budget does a fair TikTok test need?

TikTok sets minimums. Its budget guidance states that a daily budget must exceed $50 at campaign level and $20 at ad group level (figures in US dollars at the time of writing). Those are minimums for delivery, not a recommendation that small amounts will produce a clear answer.

The more useful figure is the learning phase. TikTok says an ad group should reach about 50 conversions to exit the learning phase, and that large changes to budget, bid, targeting or creative can restart it. A local service business with a modest budget may not reach 50 enquiries quickly, so plan the test in weeks, not days, and resist editing it every time a day looks quiet.

A sensible way to size the test is to start from the cost per lead you can afford. If your ceiling is £60 a lead and you want at least twenty enquiries to judge it, the test needs roughly £1,200 of spend. The guide to what a lead should cost shows how to work out that ceiling for your own business.

How should you judge the result?

Judge TikTok against your other channels on the same terms: cost per genuine enquiry, then cost per job won. Views and follows do not count, however exciting they look.

  • Lead quality. Instant form leads from any platform can include people who tapped by accident. Call them quickly and record which ones were real.
  • Area. Check enquirers are inside the area you serve. Tighten the location if not.
  • Time to convert. Higher-value jobs take weeks to close. Track whether TikTok enquiries turn into quotes and jobs, not just whether they arrive.
  • Creative fatigue. Short-form video wears out faster than a static image. Plan to film new videos regularly if the channel works.

If TikTok produces enquiries at a cost close to or below Facebook and Instagram, it is a genuine second channel and worth a regular supply of video. If it does not after a fair test, stop and put the budget where it works. There is no prize for being on every platform. M/AFZAL's Growth Partner retainer runs ads on up to two of Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for exactly that reason, with the choice made on cost per lead; the details are on the packages page.

Straight answers.

The follow-up questions owners ask most.

Do I need to post organic TikToks before running ads?
No, ads can run from a new account. A few organic posts help, because they show you which videos hold attention, and they can be turned into Spark Ads later.
Is TikTok only for young audiences?
Not necessarily, and assumptions about who uses an app are a poor guide to your own market. The practical test is to run a small Lead generation campaign in your area and look at who actually enquires.
Can I use the same video on TikTok and Instagram Reels?
Often, yes, if it was filmed vertically and does not carry another platform's watermark. Check the first seconds and the captions suit each app, and judge each placement on its own cost per lead.
Can TikTok leads go straight into my CRM?
TikTok says instant form leads can sync to a CRM through integrations such as Zapier and LeadsBridge, or through its API. Set this up before launch so no lead sits unanswered.
